Symptoms of a New Cavity in Your Mouth

Posted on 3/25/2019 by Dr. Daniel Riley
Symptoms of a New Cavity in Your MouthCavities are common, and despite your best efforts to care for your teeth, you may develop one. In some cases, you may not even know you have a cavity until we identify it in our office. However, there are some symptoms that can alert you to a problem.

An Unexplained Toothache

There are plenty of things that can cause your teeth to hurt, ranging from sinus pressure to trauma. However, if your tooth starts to hurt and you aren't sure of the cause, you may have a new cavity. Once a cavity moves through the enamel, it will move down into the dentin or even the pulp of the teeth. As the cavity progresses further, it is more likely to feel painful.

New Stains
If you notice that one of your teeth suddenly looks different than the rest, you may need cavity treatment. Discolored spots may be a sign of tooth decay, as the teeth can easily pick up stains from the beverages and food that you consume.

Teeth Sensitivity

If one tooth in particular is feeling sensitive to pain, hot or cold foods, or especially sweet substances, you might have a new cavity. While some people simply have widespread sensitivity, if you feel actual discomfort in one place, a cavity may be the culprit.

A Pit or a Hole
When a cavity forms, you may actually be able to see it. A new cavity usually displays as a small white spot on the surface of a tooth. As a cavity worsens, a pit or a hole may form, and you might actually be able to see it. This is a clear indication that you have a cavity that requires treatment.

If you suspect that you have a cavity, don't delay in getting treatment. Give our office a call to set up your next appointment.
